I continue to have the privilege to work with Deb Chorney on a regular basis, and sometimes in emergency situations, by receiving her professional counseling services and Body Talk therapy.  Deb has helped me more than any other professional in our community over the last 7 years.  I have not only been a business owner but also a single mother of 2 teenage boys.  My professional practice of colon hydrotherapy and running an international school both in Eugene, OR and in Kona, HI has been rewarding and challenging to say the least.  With so much on my plate,  I'm sure you can imagine my need for support.  I also occasionally suffer from post traumatic stress.  This is often referred to as PTSD.  This is a disorder that many war veterans, victims of abuse and others are greatly challenged by.  This is a real issue for those afflicted and it is much more common than you may think.  Although it is rare for me to suffer in that way, I do get "triggered" occasionally and I seek the expertise of Deb Chorney for support.  I encourage you to consider working with Deb whether you suffer from PTSD or would like expert support to turn your challenges into achievements. For further information about what Body Talk is, refer to Deb's web site at www.bodytalksystem.com call her at 541-914-0418 or e mail her directly at bodytalkdeb@gmail.com.  Her rates are affordable, she is personable, and most importantly her work is effective.

My hero mama, Barbara Alder Williams

My mom is my hero. She outlived both husbands, quit smoking after 20 years, birthed 4 babies naturally, raised 3 & hasn't killed any of us. She also gave up her wheel chair ride into the hospital for someone who needed it more. My mom rocks!  She is still alive and planing to go to Hawaii with me this year.  This is an older picture but she still looks the same.  If you could believe it she is almost 70 and does not dye her hair, she barely has any gray.  She says that when I first started to study holistic health and nutrition in 1995 I told her to supplement with copper and eat a Brazil nut each day for the selenium. I am not as awesome as her yet because I don't even remember telling her that way back when, but I do remember learning about those two minerals as a way to prevent gray.  Both can be toxic at high levels so it is best to not eat more than one Brazil nut each day and have your copper levels tested in your blood occasionally if you supplement with copper.  Interesting huh?!

I love you mama even if you turn gray!  You teach me to stay positive, pick myself up when I fall, dust off and try to learn from my mistakes so I don't make the same ones twice.  You have lived though more than most people would want to and you continue smiling and stubbornly doing what you love to do.  I admire you and strive to be more like you in many ways.  Thank you for giving me life, holding me when I cry, reminding me that raising teenagers is temporary, that I will get through this, and they will turn out even better than I could wish for.  You give me hope for a better future.  I cannot wait to share Kona Gold Healing Waves with you!

Happy Holidays from Tara at Alder Brooke!!

This fall I have enjoyed the most spectacular colors! I have had the privilege to ride my bike all over Eugene's trails watching birds, leaves change & drop, the people of our town out & about, & the magic of the season.  This blue heron was most generous as he modeled for my photo just before taking off to display his wing span over the reflective water at Alton Baker.

Spring and summer was amazing for me.  I enjoyed great physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.  I got to travel to the Hawaiian islands and explore new areas that I had never been to before.  I was invited to help a dear friend birth her baby girl naturally on the island of Oahu.  Wow, that was magical!  Please read more details and see the photos in the right column to learn of the adventure of my lifetime!

I am personally on another healing journey.  This time I am doing so many cool healthful practices that I am sure to look and feel better than ever before.  In fact, one of my practices has helped me to prevent what my dentist said was a 97% chance of me needing a root canal.  Thank goodness for natural healing because I avoided that procedure and now his diagnosis has changed.
Awesome!!!  Right???
If you want my secrets to health read more below or, better yet, join me in Hawaii this February for another Healing Waves adventure.  E-mail me or call for details.

How I avoided a dreaded root canal with daily oil therapy, also known as oil pulling or oil swooshing...

This is an ancient Ayurveda therapy used to release toxins, eliminate gum bleeding, and whiten teeth.  It is said to relieve and support liver function as it takes toxins out of the blood that the liver is not able to detoxify or remove.  It is also supposed to help with numerous disorders including blood disease, lung disorders, tooth and gum diseases, headaches, skin diseases, gastric ulcers, intestinal problems, poor appetite, heart and kidney ailments, encephalitis, nervous conditions, poor memory, female disorders, swollen face, and bags under the eyes.

Sounds like a cure all to me, so of course I am skeptical to believe all of it.  In my case however, I was desperate.

I had never had tooth pain to the extent that I suffered before getting the awful diagnosis of needing a root canal.  Not having a budget for health or dental insurance, I am always one to do diligent research and give full effort in healing myself naturally.  I got much of my information from a book by Andreas Moritz called "Timeless Secrets of Health and Rejuvenation".

I had heard of oil swishing with either coconut, olive, or sesame oil, and I had done it before quite casually.  I never really had any reason to do it other than I am vain and want to look my best.  The one thing I noticed is my tenderness and gum recession had diminished.  My dentist had even told me that my gums were looking amazing.  He had never told me that before!  Well, like I said, I did it only casually and didn't stick with it.  So, when I went in for a routine check up I was pained to learn that I needed a filling replaced. A few days following this procedure I found myself in unbearable pain.  I landed at my dentist's office at 8am sharp in such excruciating pain that I was immediately given pain pills and antibiotics.  My dentist took x-rays and then gave me the bad news of the 97% need for a root canal.  I was horrified as I had done tons of research in the past about the dangers and side effects of root canals.  I had always sworn that if I needed one I would get the tooth pulled rather than subject myself to that kind of risk.  In my case this tooth was more in the front than back so I quickly reconsidered my prior conviction.  I decided to try oil therapy daily as my new devoted practice.

How it works...

I decided to use organic cold pressed coconut oil.  I like the clean color and flavor but I read or heard somewhere that sesame oil is the traditional Ayurveda preference.  All I do is take a table spoon of fresh oil and put it in my mouth and swish it around vigorously for 3 to 10 minutes or until it gags me...  Then I spit it out, into the trash or outside.  Note; do not spit in the sink because that is gross!  The spit oil is milky looking with a warm liquid consistency.  Different than when put into the mouth.  After 3 rounds of swishing, I rinse with salt water or baking soda water.  Some people say that alone is an antiseptic that can kill or reduce bacterial infection.  Sounds worth a try right!?  I think so.  In fact, I just swished the whole time I wrote this section and am now feeling fresh and clean.  It is advised to do the swishing first thing each morning as a practice, followed by the salt or baking soda rinse then teeth brushing.  I don't do it consistently every morning now that I am not in crisis, but I am committed to doing it 3 times a week for life as a prevention.  Try it if you are inclined.  One thing for sure is that it won't hurt.  It may seem a little weird but face it, if you are on my newsletter list then you have probably done weirder things.  Happy swishing!

I happily still have all my teeth and no root canal!

Yep, that's me!  Every time I go to Hawaii I love to find new adventures! I also thrive on traditions such as what you see in this picture, jumping off of cliffs into the healing waters of the Pacific Ocean! What a beautiful moment!  Mahalo nui loa Malia and Jr!!!

~Malia and her first born precious daughter Kalia Malufau Fall 2013~
Herbs for mama for after birthing from Sacred Waters Birthing Center, thank you Anita!!!

Almost 1 week after the projected due date for TeMoana (Hawaiian for "The Ocean") to be born, Malia invited me to go to Waimea beach on the North Shore of Oahu.  Malia had swam through an under water tunnel or canal over 10 years prior and thought that if she were to do it again now, she could show TeMoana just how coming through the birth canal was done.  I was up for the adventure so her hubby Jr, Malia and I pilled into their car and drove through the pinapple plantations north to the most beautiful places I have ever seen.  We saw many Amakua (Hawaiian for "natural protectors") that even Jr was getting excited.  Mostly there were rainbows (anuene) that seemed to span the whole horizon and then there were  turtles (honu) that we could see as we drove by the ocean to our special sacred spot.  It was a beautiful (aulelei - Samoan for beautiful) day and magic was in the air.  Jr and Malia taught me many Hawaiian, Samoan and some Tahitian words patiently as I was quickly taking notes.  When we arrived there were wild chicken, grassy park area and white sandy beach with a perfect walk to the big rock you see me jumping off on the top of this page.  What is most amazing is the tunnel that goes through the middle.  After Jr and did a little climbing, jumping, diving and giving Malia a hard time because she actually considered jumping herself, we swam and floated around the entrance to the tunnel.  When we held our breath and dove a few feet under we could see the light opening.  None of us had goggles but the water was so clear we could see perfect and somehow the salt didn't bother us either.  First Jr went for it and swam through the tunnel.  I am guessing it was about 20 feet long but that may be an exaggeration because it seemed so long going through against the currant.  He waited on the other side while Malia contemplated and decided it was not the right time.  She was listening to her Na'aoe (Hawaiian for "gut") and opted to wait till the time was Divine.  Jr came back around and we decided that I was going to go first, then Malia then Jr.  That was a much smarter order since if anything were to go wrong going thru we would be better off having the big Samoan papa following us rather than the other way around.  A local surfer boy about half my weight it seemed, offered to go before me.  He repeated how easy it was and said "You got dis girl".  I waited until I felt the time was right and I took in a deep breath, dove down and swam with all my might thru to the light.  About half way through I found myself rising to the ceiling of the tunnel and the current making swimming forward very challenging.  When I realized I wasn't moving far and maybe even staying stuck in the same spot against the current and my feet were hitting the sides and ceiling, I knew I could be in deep trouble very quickly if I didn't swim harder or do something different.  My will to live kicked in, I did not panic and I resorted to turning over onto my back side, gripping any part of the ceiling that I could and I crawled upside down, totally immersed with zero air available to me till I got to the lip of the other side opening and I grabbed it and pushed myself with all my might then surfaced on the other side.  My immediate thought as I gasped for air was holly shit Malia that was way harder than those boys said it was.  I started praying with all my heart and it seemed like an eternity but just minutes later Malia emerged.  The kids jumping off the rocks all cheered for us, especially Malia.  We both embraced and exchanged stories of our journey.  She had an identical story to mine.  The current was pulling the other way and she too had to resort to turning over and climbing her way to the surface.  We were adrenaline rushed and decided that we were not doing that again.  We floated around a bit and she walked on the ocean floor carrying big rocks hoping to encourage TeMoana to gravitate down and out.

Mama Malia and baby TeMoana's first beach visit

I was interviewed and featured in Spirituality Health magazine!  You may read my verbatim quotes online on my website or here if you can zoom in.  It is also archived up on the Spirituality and Health website under the last September/October issue with the "Ask a Practitioner" heading.  I feel honored to be a part of a publication that is holistic, well respected and, in this issue, has Venus on the cover!  Too cool!  Thanks Ilima Loomis!

And if that is not enough... I was also interviewed for the cover story in Experience Life magazine!  This month's (November 2013) issue of "Experience L!fe" magazine talks about "5 food combos to avoid".  My name is all over the article.  There is some interesting information from an Ayurveda practitioner, too, that makes the article holistic and non biased.  I think it was well done and, once again, I am proud to be a part of this nationally distributed publication.  Thanks Experience L!fe!

This is the last photo taken of my dad and I before he passed away.
He has been an inspiration for my personal healing arts and professional practice, thanks Dad!

Jonathan Brooke Alder and Tara Lyn Alder, October 1994
December 19, 1948 ~ November 4, 1994.

To learn more about my dad, how he passed, and how he inspired my life forever for the better, read my former newsletters.  This go around I want to share something new about him.  First of all, my business is named after him and dedicated to him.  He was named after the original Jonathan Alder who is written about in history and in the novel "The Captivity of Jonathan Alder".  This is a true story of how my ancestor Jonathan Alder was taken captive at around age 8 and raised by Native Americans far away from his original home.  Later in life he reunited with his mother and, because he spoke both English and the Native American tongue of his Sango tribe, he became a peace keeper as he traveled to and from his tribe to his original home land.
My dad is also a direct descendent of Lorenzo DaPonte, the Italian composer for Mozart.
I know that is all cool enough, but there is more.  The name Brooke came from a great uncle somewhere in the family blood line that must have done some cool things, too, because my dad's middle name came from him and he always had a picture of this distinguished and well dressed man on his mantle.
The things I remember most about my dad is that he loved people and they loved him.  He sold insurance for Farmers and even earned the diamond I wear as an honor for his outstanding work. My dad liked to play tennis, duplicate bridge, golf, ski, travel, talk, learn, smoke, drink, and be silly.  He was so well loved that when he passed away, he and my mom were practically best friends even after being divorced for years.  More people showed up to his memorial than could fit into the funeral home.  That service center had never seen so many people show up for a service in the entire history of their funeral/memorial home!  That was really cool, but one of the hardest days of my life.  I did have my grandma on one side and my uncle Clay on the other.  My brothers and I cried like never before.  The whole family worked harmoniously to help settle my dads estate.  There was no fighting over anything, just wanting to make sure everyone was going to be okay.

One of the best things my dad ever taught  me was to focus.  He said, "Choose one thing to focus on and become an expert at it."  He claimed that I could be anybody I want to be, that I could thrive at whatever I chose.  He said that I would be wise and successful if I chose one thing at a time and really became an expert at it.  Nowadays, as I see some of my friends and colleagues struggle financially, seemingly all over the place with their choice in work, I remember that advice and am glad that I chose to be an expert internal cleansing specialist.  Thanks Dad!  Your spirit forever lives on in me, Clint, Chris, Ian, Pablo and Isaiah.  We love you and honor you for your gifts.

My dad wrote a credo.  He made me and my brothers sign it.  Words of wisdom.  My dads spirit lives on!
I have adapted this credo for my practice at Alder Brooke Healing Arts.  Thanks Dad!

1. Think good thoughts and say good things.

2. Read - if you read 5 books on any subject, you may become an expert.

3. Set goals - short term and long term. Put them in writing.

4. Integrity with others. To thine own self be true. Honesty and
integrity with others developes TRUST.

5. Self discipline. Keep commitments - to others and to yourself.

6. Be responsible. Your lot in life is strictly up to you. Follow
through with your commitments. Check in to ensure completion.

7. Seek out the right kind of friends and associates.

8. Learn to handle the failures and setbacks.

9. Go the 2nd mile. Do TWICE what is expected.

10. Invest in yourself. Be open to learn, have fun, and grow.

11. Forgive. Give a 2nd chance (but maybe 3 strikes and you're out).

12. Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.

13. Allow yourself to feel emotions and allow others the same.

14. Recognize that other people are different with regard to values,
emotions, etc. This is okay.

15. Listen to others -- you may learn something. You rarely learn
anything while you're talking.

16. Mistakes will be made. But it's truly a sad mistake when nothing
is learned from your mistakes.

17. Dream the IMPOSSIBLE DREAM.

18. Never give up.

Believe in Yourself!

Dr. George Raquel

During my stay in Hawaii this summer I had the pleasure of working with Dr. George Raquel, D.C. at his beautiful chiropractic clinic in Waipahu.  Here is a gushing review that says it all:

"I am proud to recommend Dr. Raquel.  He's hip on natural methods to  release blockage that cause disease.  He'll educate you on foods, detox and non medicinal remedies.  My family and I started seeing him for colonics (colon hydrotherapy) over a year ago.  He offers patients a class ll open system table which is  the best possible Colonic Irrigation method out there.  The space is clean, private and efficient.  I've also had THE BEST massages from various practitioners in his office.  This mans standards are always kept high.  I'll soon post an update on his adjustments as a chiropracter when i get the nerve to get it done."
